Otto George Neuman of Philomath died Thursday at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center. He was 80.

He was born in Corvallis to Hugo Lambert and Anna Josephine Tobola Neuman, the next to the youngest of 11 children. He grew up on his father's winery on Neuman Road south of Philomath and graduated from Corvallis High School in 1943.

He married Betty Burington Jan. 26, 1951, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Corvallis. They raised their children on a farm near Philomath.

He served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. LSM 62 during World War II.

He was a contract logger for George Shroyer Logging before starting the Neuman Quarry & Excavating business in 1962. He operated the business until 1988, when he retired.

His hobbies included moose and elk hunting, fishing, traveling and raising trout.

He was a life member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where he was also a third- and fourth-degree Knight of Columbus and a member of the honor guard. He belonged to the Corvallis American Legion Post No. 11 and honor guard; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 640; the U.S.S. LSM-LSR Association; National Rifle Association of America; North America Hunting Club; and the Oregon Hunters Association.


George was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty, of Philomath; sons David, Jerry, Paul and Peter Neuman of Philomath; daughters Marjorie Morford, Susan Neuman and Jacqueline Robinson of Philomath and Mary Grill of Albany; 19 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Anna, sons Tim and Tony, seven brothers and three sisters.

Viewing will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 19, at McHenry Funeral Home. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Monday, June 19, at McHenry Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
