Gary J. Curran, 76, of Lebanon died Monday in Lebanon.

Gary was born Sept. 2, 1940, in Portland the son of Daniel and Helen Kathryn (Clohessy) Curran. Gary was raised in Portland and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1958. He then attended Lewis and Clark Junior College, Portland State University and graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in physical education and health. He later earned his master’s degree in education from the University of Oregon

Gary married Mary Ystad on Sept. 9, 1961, in Portland. They resided in Creswell, Baker City and Klamath Falls, where Gary had taught and coached. They moved to Lebanon in 1972 and Gary began working for the Scio School District, where he taught, coached, served as the athletic director and as vice-principle.

Gary became an insurance agent in 1984 working for the Knights of Columbus and later Allstate Insurance. He was one of the first life specialists for Allstate Insurance Company in the State of Oregon. He retired in 2005 and then for eight years drove foster children to see their parents for the State of Oregon.

Gary was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church, the Linn-Benton Duck Club and the Wigwam Wiseman. He was past Grand Knight and District Deputy for the Knights of Columbus. Gary loved all sports and was an avid Duck and Lebanon Warrior fan.
He is survived by his wife, Mary of Lebanon; children Maureen Parks of Portland, Michael Curran of Abilene, Texas. and Tom Curran of Cave Creek, Arizona; brother Pat Curran and sister Ann Curran, both of Portland; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

A recitation of the rosary will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 7, 2017, at St. Edward Catholic Church. A Memorial Mass will follow at 11 a.m., also at the church. Family and friends are encouraged to wear yellow and green.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the St. Edward Catholic Church Scholarship Fund, the American Cancer Society or an athletic fund of the donor’s choosing and sent in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St., Lebanon, OR 97355.
