October 31, 1922 - May 12, 1997
John Gilroy enlisted in the Marines the day after his seventeenth birthday. After completing boot camp, he became a member of the Headquarters Company, Sixth Battalion, Marine Corps Reserve stationed near his home town of Philadelphia.
By 1943, Gilroy was a sergeant leading a squad in Baker Company, 24th Marines. He was wounded in action during the fighting on Namur, and was evacuated.
Sergeant Gilroy's wound prevented his return to the battalion, but did not stop his career in the Marines. By the time of his retirement in August, 1966, he had served in Korea and Vietnam, and had attained the rank of First Sergeant.
Gilroy died in Woodbridge, Virginia, in 1997.
