Father Gerard (Gerry) Creedon on November 16, 2017 at Washington Hospital Center surrounded by family and friends, praying psalms and singing Irish songs, passed to his eternal reward.
Father Creedon, son of John and Gretta Creedon, was born in Inchigeelagh County Cork, Ireland. Deeply regretted by brothers and sisters Teresa Wilson, Nora Mary Hyde, Oliver, Bernard, Thomas, Joseph, Dominic, Willie John, Miriam O'Connell, Margaret O'Shea. Also mourned by brothers and sisters in law, nieces, nephews and cousins. Father Creedon was predeceased by brothers Michael, Con Don, Richard, brother in law Con Hyde and sister in law Sheila Creedon. In addition to his family, Father Creedon touched the lives of many people in Ireland, the United States and the Dominican Republic, who now deeply grieve his passing.
Father Creedon attended seminary at All Hallows College in Dublin and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Richmond on June 16, 1968. He held a Bachelor's Degree in English and Latin from University College in Dublin, a Master's Degree in Theology from Washington Theological Union, and a second Master's Degree in Social Work from The Catholic University of America.
Father Creedon was pastor of Holy Family Church Dale City, Good Shepherd Church, Mount Vernon, and St. Charles Borromeo, Arlington. He also served as Associate Pastor at several parishes in the Diocese of Arlington. He was Director of Catholic Charities from 1981 to 1988, and also served as Chairman of Peace and Justice Committee, Diocese of Arlington. He was founding Pastor of the Arlington Mission in the parish of San Francisco de Asis Banica, Dominican Republic.
Father Creedon's body will be received at Holy Family Church, 14160 Ferndale Rd, Dale City, VA 22193, at noon on Monday, November 20, 2017. Visitation will continue until 7:00 pm, closing with a Prayer Vigil. Mass of Christian burial will take place on Tuesday at 11:00 am at Good Shepherd Church, 8710 Mount Vernon Highway, Alexandria, VA 22309. Reception will follow the Mass in the Father Gerry Creedon Hall, adjacent to Good Shepherd Church. Burial will take place in Inchigeelagh, Ireland at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Holy Family Building Fund at 14160 Ferndale Rd, Dale City, VA 22193.
