Lieutenant Colonel Edward Anthony "Tony" Grimm (USMC Retired) entered life eternal on May 30, 2018, joining his beloved wife, Waja (Heckler). Tony is survived by daughters Lee-Anna Park, Amy Grimm, Laurie Cronin (Edward) and son, Slade Grimm and his four grandchildren, Patrick Park, Taylor Park, Briscoe Park and Beatrix Cronin as well as his beloved sister, Diana Brotherton-Ware Townsend (Richard). Tony was born on April 8, 1937 to Edward E. and Ernestine (Bernardin) Grimm, a Navy family in Washington, DC. Tony witnessed the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, evacuating to the mainland shortly thereafter.
Tony went on to attend over thirteen different schools all over the United States until he entered Saint John's College High School in Washington, DC. Saint John's military traditions made a deep and lasting impact on Tony who was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps after graduating from Duke University in 1960. Tony served with distinction with the United States Marines for twenty-three years from the Cuban Missile Crisis to Vietnam and other stops in Southeast Asia. His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Joint Services Commendation Medal and two awards of the Navy Commendation Medal. He also received the Combat Action Award.
Tony found a second career as part of the "Green Mafia", a collection of former military officers who transitioned to legal administrators. He worked for several prominent firms in the greater Washington, DC area before retiring a second time.
An avid reader and life-long Civil War historian, Tony competed with the Washington Blue Rifles, a competitive organization dedicated to the unique firearms used during the Civil War. Tony lived a vibrant Catholic faith, active in his parish and the Knights of Columbus; this faith permeated his interactions and was shared freely with family, friends and business associates. He loved passionately and deeply always eager to lend a hand or shoulder, his quiet dignity a source of strength. Tony's propensity to share endless amazing stories, especially about family history, his world travels and unique life experiences will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
A Funeral Mass was held to celebrate the life of Tony on Friday, June 22, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manassas. Interment followed immediately in Quantico National Cemetery.
