GEORGE W. WHITTING JR.

 

George W. Whitting, Jr. was born on May 15, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois to George W., Sr. and Marguerite (nee Dwyer) Whitting. He died Thursday, October 13, 2016 at home surrounded by his adoring family.

George worked as a provision broker and financial planner later in his career. He was extremely active in St. Mary Parish, serving as one time President of St. Vincent de Paul Society, member of Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Grove Council #13448. Active Board member of Cambridge on the Lake Home Owners Association and recipient of their rare Life Time Achievement Award for his years of service. Former member of Olympia Fields Country Club and loyal and proud member of The Champagne Club.

He honorably served in the Army during WW II, participating in the Pacific Campaign, where he earned two Battle Stars, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star a Bronze Arrowhead. He also received a Purple Heart.

George was a lifelong Blackhawks and White Sox fan, and loved many Cubs fans.

George is survived by his loving children, Laura (Robert) Wise, Nancy (Michael) Faber, Mary (Patrick) Honan, and James (Nancy Coen) Whitting; his cherished 'Grands', Brian (Erin) Wise, Sarah (Aaron) Ratschan, Michael (Sarah Seavers) Wise, Maura and Megan Honan, Laura and Connor Whitting; and his precious 'Great-Grands' Colin and Julianne Rose Wise; his sister, Marjorie (the late Robert) Harrington; his loving sister In law Norma (the late Robert) Sommer and devoted nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years Marion 'Babe' (nee Kelly); his sister in laws, Muriel (the late Joseph) von Albade and Virginia (the late Robert) Cook.

George found joy in music, his paintings, golfing and fishing because they were all about family.

Visitation from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Monday, October 17, 2016 at Glueckert Funeral Home Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Rd. (4 blocks south of Palatine Rd.), Arlington Heights where prayers will be said at 9:15 am, Tuesday, October 18, 2016 proceeding to St. Mary Catholic Church, 10 N. Buffalo Grove Rd., Buffalo Grove, Mass at 10:00 am. Interment at St. Mary Parish Cemetery.
